I am now one of the thousands and thousands of design students in the UK all facing the challenge of getting noticed in a jam packed industry.

I believe in an equal balance of concept and execution in order to produce work that has worth. Blurring the divide between computer software generated design and traditional hand made processes to create something which can be seen to have depth and layers of process.

This blog will showcase work I produce as part of my degree, self initiated projects and behind the scenes of some of my processes. Basically like all the other fucking design student blogs out there. :)

There was a great turn out, I was informed that Duster Monster was a hit with the younger audience amongst the visitors and was told a nice story of a child chasing him around the stand, he didn’t manage to catch him which was lucky! I wish I saw that :)

Ok, ok this post is far overdue, sorry :(

I have been fortunate enough to have been incredibly busy with all sorts of work over the summer “break” from video production, animation and graphic design. In this post I can reveal my contribution to the Everyday Delights show at Tent London curated by JJAM. His name at the moment is Duster Monster and he will play the lead role in my next short film. (he can walk by the way!!!)

To see him in the flesh and strutting his stuff pop down to the Truman Brewery on Brick Lane between 23-26 September and look for stand G01 at the Tent exhibition which is part of London Design Week.

So, I’m back to uni soon and will be getting my head back into learning, I’m looking forward to starting work on some of my new ideas and in theory I should have more time to keep this blog a bit more up to date.

also, just so you all know my website is down at the moment and no one seems to know why. I’m working on a fix today (hopefully!)

Long time no post..
I have plenty of cool projects in the pipeline though! I’ve been asked to contribute along with 49 other creative types to an exhibition and book curated by jjam that will be part of London design week. It’s also open to submissions where the top 50 will be in the book more info at http://www.jjam.info/call-for-entries

I’ve also made plans to team up again with Chris Moss Acid and a fantastic dancer called Ugo to create a crazy audio/visual remix concept, that’s been on the cards for a while now.

And most excitingly I just got my hands on an underwater HD camera, so expect to see some cool/trippy magic stuff floating around my vimeo.

Next post I’ll have something cool to show!

Finally I have got round to uploading my entry to the D&AD...

Finally I have got round to uploading my entry to the D&AD Student Awards, it won a second place yellow pencil which I am really happy about. I’ve been featured on the LCC blog where they asked me a few questions about the awards and my film go check it here

There is also a bit about the ceremony on the onedotzero blog, which has an embarrassing photo of me with my award. if you want to see check it here

Here are the three posters I will be exhibiting at my end of year show at LCC. Though originally...

Here are the three posters I will be exhibiting at my end of year show at LCC. Though originally I (along with many other students) had much grander plans. Given that we live in a democratic society and we are fortunate to be entitled to freedom of speech I have decided to express my disappointment about how the end of year show is panning out. This may turn out to be quite a rant…

We were asked to create a piece of work for the end of year show that had a “WOW” factor and generally it was pretty much an open brief. Students were coming up with fantastic ideas which were encouraged during tutorials, many of those ideas became reality, which has been great to see.

Now however, we face the reality of fitting 88 students creative endeavors into one moderately sized class room. Whilst the majority of other courses across the university exhibit their students work in the purpose built galleries, entrance hall and much larger ground floor studios. We are resigned to a room on the third floor at the back of the university building. Given that this course is an FdA and not a BA, I can understand that we would not get any of the prime locations in the university.

But we also have to share our room with the 3rd year top up course which is a full BA degree, now this is something I don’t understand. These 24 (aprox) students should be able to exhibit their work in one of the more prime locations alongside other BA courses.

With such a tight squeeze into our room it will be no surprise to discover that our once “WOW” projects have had to be shrunk to fit. Hence why I am now exhibiting the three posters above, though originally I had intended to show my three films on the old stripped monitor you see in the poster, attracting attention at first to the object and then to the moving image work. Now every student can only show a maximum of three posters along with moving image work (if applicable) being shown in a big compilation on a screen with no sound, there will be a few computers connected to the internet where people could look at the moving image work with sound (I hope). But this doesn’t come close to my original plans, especially as I commissioned three musicians to make the music for my films which will now predominantly be shown in silence.

The show hasn’t happened yet and it may not end up being the disaster I anticipate, but I had to write this to communicate my frustration and I speak for other students who feel the same. I am also fully aware this type of thing goes on at other universities as I witnessed it first hand just the other week, but it’s hard enough trying to get noticed in this jam packed industry with out having universities not communicating coherently to the students when the goal posts have moved.

This is by no means a reflection of the course in general, we have fantastic opportunities working on live briefs and are given freedom to create the best work possible, with support from the tutors. But I feel something needs to change in time for next year, so other students won’t have the same frustration and unnecessary anxiety.

If you feel I have over stepped the mark or agree with this rambling rant, then please email me to express your point of view.

—-

This is the third and final experimental video created for my...

This is the third and final experimental video created for my FMP at London College of Communication. and here comes the blurb to put this into context…

The over all concept: (first section of this text is repeated from previous post)

We were given a list of graphic communication formats to choose from and then asked to create a piece of work with its content somehow relating back to the chosen format (if that makes sense?)

I chose the format screen based design and decided to specialise in moving image for screen. In order to meet the specific requirements of the brief I began my research into the early days of screen and took inspiration from that time for the titles of three short experiments in moving image.

One more layer to this project was the music. I approached different musicians asking them to choose a title and make a piece of music for it. I didn’t give them any information as to where the tile came from, so not to influence what they would create.

The track for this film was produced by the band Blind Voyeurs, to find out more about them check out their link in the credits.

The inspiration for the title of this piece was taken from the company Technicolor and from what I understand from my research the secrecy of how they functioned as a company. This was how I linked my content to my format, I then went on to abstract that theme and depict it in this mixed media piece. Originally the ‘Technicolor Secrets’ were going to be giant bubbles floating in this fantastic landscape, however due to the cold British weather, the bubbles would not reach the size I needed. I then went with my back up plan, which is what you see above. I filmed on location and then edited the rushes into a sequence that worked with the flow of the music. I then set up a green screen and filmed the paper shapes I had made, matching the light source to that of the specific shots by hand. I have some behind the scenes footage of that on my Vimeo. Adding a simple gradient overlay to the paper shapes gave them their colour. I also added shadows/reflections to the shots and attempted to bring depth to the shots by putting the shapes behind a few things and increasing/decreasing the amount of blur to create the illusion of them going in and out of focus.

Credits:

Music:
Blind Voyeurs - myspace.com/blindvoyeurs

Production assistant/Driver - Jessica Dance

I worked on all other parts of the film.

Here is number two of three for my FMP and here is the blurb to...

Here is number two of three for my FMP and here is the blurb to put this film into context:

The over all concept: (first section of this text is repeated from previous post)

We were given a list of graphic communication formats to choose from and then asked to create a piece of work with its content somehow relating back to the chosen format (if that makes sense?)

I chose the format screen based design and decided to specialise in moving image for screen. In order to meet the specific requirements of the brief I began my research into the early days of screen and took inspiration from that time for the titles of three short experiments in moving image.

One more layer to this project was the music. I approached different musicians asking them to choose a title and make a piece of music for it. I didn’t give them any information as to where the title came from, so not to influence what they would create.

The track for this film was produced by Michael Wookey for more information and music from him please visit his website site listed in the credits.

This film has no computer effects used, I had originally wanted to make it with only the use of traditional equipment, but was unable to gain access to what I needed. It was filmed in HD through a prism that I manually rotated. The images you see are projected vintage slides from Hong Kong. I wanted to create the illusion of bringing these still images to life, through the effects created by filming through the prism.

Credits:

Music:
Michael Wookey - michaelwookey.com

Slides provided by:
Joan Davies

I worked on all other parts of the film.

(NO GRADING OR EFFECTS, I just neutralised the white balance in camera and went with what I filmed)

So this is the first of three experimental videos I created for...

So this is the first of three experimental videos I created for my FMP and here is the blurb to put it into context:

The over all concept:

We were given a list of graphic communication formats to choose from and then asked to create a piece of work with its content somehow relating back to the chosen format (if that makes sense?)

I chose the format screen based design and decided to specialise in moving image for screen. In order to meet the specific requirements of the brief I began my research into the early days of screen and took inspiration from that time for the titles of three short experiments in moving image.

One more layer to this project was the music. I approached different musicians asking them to choose a title and make a piece of music for it. I didn’t give them any information as to where the tile came from, so not to influence what they would create.

The track for this film was produced by Chris Moss Acid, i took inspiration from the track in terms of the pacing of the film and the darker nature of the content.

If your still reading this, I’ll now talk about the film above. The title of this work was taken from a term given to the cinema during it’s very early days. Putting this title into a new context it made me think about how many of us live our social lives through a computer and this is how I related this piece of work to my chosen format. Other then that it is completely open to interpretation.

Credits:

Music:
Chris Moss Acid - soundcloud.com/chrismossacid

Computer heads (in order of appearance)
Will Garthwaite
Josu Muniz
Rob Oldfield
Jeffery Mundell

Production assistant
Jessica Dance

I worked on all other parts of the film.

Try and work out where the samples are from, it’s not too hard really.

Also thought I’d mention one of my films is complete, another is 80% and another is 10%. So much to do right now, I’m feeling the pressure.

Oh!!! And I’ve been nominated for my entry to D&AD, which means I stand a chance of getting 1st, 2nd or 3rd place. To check out my submission on the D&AD site click here. I’ll let you know how I get on.

A mix of some new work and some very old that I can’t bring myself to chuck out just yet. It is still being updated, but most of the work I like is on there. Plus I have just upgraded to a Vimeo plus account which means you can see all my videos in HD where ever they may be embedded, like my new website… so go check it out :)
