BUSY BUSY BUSY...
HUGE/MASSIVE THANK YOU!!! to Digital Creatives blog that have featured me :) pop along to see all the other cool creative peeps they feature click here.
If you have been checking my blog recently you will have noticed a drop in the number of posts ie no posts in a week :) I have been writing a report on becoming a freelancer, which is ironic as I am a freelancer.
That’s been handed in now,...
A HUGE thank you to Point & Anchor for posting my Escapism typodoodle to their blog.
I quickly cobbled together this out of some pieces I had used in a couple of other projects, the anchor was used in a window display and the & was used for a promo flyer and I drew the pointing hand specifically oh and the paper stones where also used with the anchor for the window display.

Now this may be difficult to get across my thinking behind this piece. It is for the letter X of my A-Z and features quotes from the book XXX 30 Porn-Star Portraits by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders.
I want to confuse the senses. Perhaps more for men, as in do you look at the legs that make up the X’s and use your imagination to think about who they belong to and then? Or do you read...
This is my response to the letter P in my A-Z of Graphic Language. I was inspired by stereotypical bedroom posters such as fast cars and classic pin ups.
The equation of Paper + Print = Poster, is missing one factor; Design. It is a kind of joke about how when I am asked to produce a poster for someone they want it printed as soon as possible, completely forgetting about the design...
This will be the front cover of my A-Z of Graphic Language. I used a type face I received for my birthday (if any one knows what it is, please let me know) and my own hand cut typeface (Industrie Sonderbar) which is used in the book for specific titles.
I wanted to use the blocks rather than what the blocks would print, to highlight the traditional craft processes that feature within the book.

This work was inspired by a quote taken from a Kyle Cooper talk at D&AD. When I herd those words, they resonated with me and is now part of my methodology when generating concepts and executing ideas.
With this piece I set up the shot with a large glass jar filled with water and back lit it. That was me setting up the condition in which to experiment. I then went on to experiment with...
The thinking behind this illustration (which I call Typodoodles) is that the lines have quite literally escaped from the canvas. The lines either pull you into the word or the other way round and each viewer can take a different path.

I created this woodblock typeface by cutting each one with a mallet and chisel. I designed the typeface on the computer, but wasn’t content with leaving it there.
After having an induction to woodblock printing, I was inspired to render this type out of wood and hand print it using traditional methods. I found this process so much more satifying then depending on the computer...
V is for Visual Noise.
Something that really grinds my gears is the overwhelming amount of junk mail still being produced today, I’m probably not the only one that has an issue with this.
This image was made up of fliers and junk mail that I picked up over the space of about a month. If you haven’t guessed already, it is supposed to be a wave form of noise.
I intend to...
This is the first of a series of street sculptures inspired after looking into Marcel Duchamp for my A-Z Of Graphic Language.
Duchamp would create art from ready made objects, by putting them into the context of an art gallery we would look at that object in a new way.
I’m attempting a similar theory in a modern context. This series of sculptures will be used to highlight the...
This is perhaps quite a nerdy mac user in joke, but it represents U for Undo as part of my A-Z. Sorry to any PC users if you don’t get this.

For the letter T in my A-Z of Graphic Language, I have chosen perhaps quite an obvious word related to design.
Typography to me is not just a way of presenting words, but also a chance to play with things on a deeper level. Things that the average viewer would be unaware of but to me and people I tell, there is a hidden layer with the choice of typeface I use or design.
This typeface was...
This illustration represents imagination, something I am a huge fan of. Who isn’t?
I used to spend hours daydreaming as a child and would get told off for it. Now I daydream regularly with no one to tell me off.
Having a vivid imagination is something I’m proud of and now where I am able to focus that imagination into pieces of work I use it every day.

Inspired by the work of László Moholy-Nagy. I wanted to develop modern ways of using technology much as he did at the time with photography and kinetic sculptures.
I created an octahedron from paper straws and taped e-wire to it. (battery powered glowing wire - amazing stuff!) It was a low-fi approach and fairly cheap, I’m really pleased with the results. This is something I am going to...
What better letter to start with than the letter A. I am moving more into Art Direction and Animation, so I used this as a chance to experiment with a stop frame animation shot from different angles. This was all shot in camera, with a a small use of After Effects to pan across the shots and create an extra sense of motion.
This was conceived, set up, shot and cut together over a weekend. I also...
My A-Z Of Graphic Language List
I started this project by coming up with a list of topics, people and processes related to graphic language. The words I chose have a connection to my work, some much more literally than others.
A = Art Direction & Animation
B = Bauhaus
C = Custom Kicks
D = Duchamp
E = Escapism
F = Factory Records
G = Generative Design
H = Hand Made
I = Imagination
J = Joseph Muller-Brockmann
K =...
My First Project
For my first project at LCC we were given the brief of creating an A to Z of graphic language. An open brief with only a few restrictions, I have sunk my teeth into this project and have tried to explore lots of new processes and techniques. Also researching into theory that I didn’t have the time for when working full time.
The majority of posts over the next few weeks will be from this...
